A complex yet effortless building, the Design Plaza encapsulates the energy of the cultural hub in Dongdaemun, an area that has itself earned the nickname of the "town that never sleeps" thanks to its late-night fashion market. The first architecture present in place of DDP was the Dongdaemun stadium. The stadium was built during the reign of a Japanese colony for the wedding ceremony of the Japanese prince. From that time, several sports and Olympic events until the year 2017, the date of the stadium’s demolition. After the Seoul Olympics event of 1988, the stadium was left abandoned, and it became the local market exactly in front of the biggest fashion hub of South Korea. Few sewing factories were set up in the nearby market areas, resulting in the formation of the largest fashion hub in South Korea.

The DDP façade cladding system is an exemplary result of such a process. Construction the exterior envelope of DDP was a challenge as the cladding system consists of over 45,000 panels in various sizes and degrees of curvature. This was made possible by the use of parametric modelling with an advanced metal-forming and fabrication process to develop a mass-customization system.

The DDP is set to host five separate design and art exhibitions, featuring works from various designers, as well as collection of traditional Korean art from the Kansong Art Museum. Throughout the minimalistic interior, Zaha chose to fill the spaces with familiar design elements like solid acrylic panels, stainless steel, polished stone and glass fiber reinforced gypsum. Chaotic yet fluid bleached white acrylic branches and supporting features populate the interior, alongside juxtaposed design touches like unfinished concrete and stainless steel.

Implementing such construction technologies make DDP one of Korea’s most innovative and technological advanced constructions to date. With parametric building information modelling software and design computation, we were able to continually test and adapt the design to the ever-evolving client's brief as well as integrate engineering and construction requirements. These technologies helped to maintain the originaldesign aspiration throughout the project’s construction. It also streamlined the architectural design process and coordination with consultants.

The team were able to have greater control of the design and details, with much greater precision than a conventional construction process; giving the client and the contractors a much better understanding and control of the project. DDP is the first public project in Korea to utilize the 3-Dimensional Building Information Modelling (BIM) and other digital tools in construction.
Project Leader
He made this building intending to provide an open social area to the people who visited it, and he succeeded in it. The design also had several attributes that were dedicated to ecological reasons, such as solar panels, a facade with double skin, and water flow with recycling features. The outer part of the DDP is a big structure made in the shape of a mushroom, and it is above ground level and floating in the air. The interior of the DDP is made and finished in the smoothest manner with reinforced walls, synthetic fiber, polished stone finish, and acrylic resin.

Hadid focused on the dynamism of the Dongdaemun area, which is in a state of constant flux from the early morning to late at night. Her design, entitled “Metonymic Landscape,” uses the historical, cultural, social, and economic characteristics of the Dongdaemun area as its foundation and adds futuristic values and vision to it. Hadid created a space that flows without boundaries, based on her observations of the region's continuously changing dynamics. The façade itself is not solid; instead it incorporates a field of pixilation and perforations, that together create a changing visual dynamic that shifts depending on lighting and seasonal conditions. For instance at night, the changing façade reflects Dongdaemun’s many lights and signage, turning the project into one giant illuminated structure.
Realized by xsxl, the design was devised with the dual goals of maximizing commercial entertainment and maintaining brand identity, reinterpreting traditional motifs into a new visual language that reflects contemporary trends. Dongdaemun Design Plaza (동대문 디자인 플라자) or DDP has an impressive structure of modern architecture. The design from the outside is stunning and cool while the inside has spectacular designs that continue with elaborate archways and fancy lighting. Implementing such construction technologies make DDP one of Korea's most innovative and technological advanced constructions to date. ➥ Handpicked experiences by KoreaToDo for their uniqueness, value, popularity, price competitiveness and at times, tedious to reach by public transport.
